Are You Pinging The Correct Way?
Almost everybody will be telling you that the larger you ping list is, the better. That’s why people are searching for the so called “Ultimate Ping List” to add to their default Wordpress setting that has only http://rpc.pingomatic.com.
Well, it’s true; the more sites that you are pinging to, the better. However, this could also be the reason of getting your blog banned from pinging services. You know, getting your blog banned from pinging services is like having your sites being banned by the search engines when they delisted you from their listing. In another words, you’ll lose out on high volume of traffic from various sources.
Basically, the problem is not that because you’re pinging too many sites but the flaw of Wordpress system that automatically ping each and every time that you add a new post to your blog. Wow! That’s hands free. Isn’t that a dream come true? In fact, it’s it but the system failed to recognize when you’re actually making a new post or just an edit to the existing post.
That means, if you’re going to make a punctuation correction, the system will automatically ping the same post to all sites. And then you found a spelling error and amend it once again, the system will ping again. Just imagine what would happen if you submit a same article to article directories a few times consecutively or submitting your site to search engines repeatedly for a few times. Yeah, simple – engines’ spiders are going to make a bad report on you.
So, it doesn’t matter whether you’re doing autoblogging or real blogging, it’s crucial that you fix the setting in your Wordpress blog to benefit from the free traffic. Well, it doesn’t require much effort. You just need to install a plugin. I’m using the Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger. Here’s a snapshot of the report that it recorded on a post that I purposely edit to show you how it functions:

See? It pings to 6 main pinging services and how it ignores from pinging again on the same post that was edited.
Unless you’re so confident that you’ll never make errors and that every post you make is final without amendments, you don’t need this and may leave the default setting as is. But I doubt that anyone can have such high precision. So, don’t risk.
Here’s another plugin that you can try – MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer
Note: I’ve never tested the latter, so I’m not sure if it’s as good but just aware that they serve the same purpose.
If you like what I'm doing on my blog, you can help me stay awake by grabbing me a cup of coffee.... thanks ;)

Wow, surprising. I just left the default in WP (which is just one pinging service) and thought this was enough. I will check up that. Thanks for the tips.
So I wonder how to tell if the pinging service has banned you? I ping everything, my joomla site, my bookmarks but I’ve never known if I was bannded for doing this.
I didn’t know for this ping list until now. Thanks very much. Yes, I am wondering about same question @Al. But there is mighty google.I will search on it.
Awesome post! Added you to my reader a while back have not been dissapointed, keep up the great posting.
nice post, i think this could be really helpful for a lot of people, i know everyone wants to have their face out there, and this can do the trick thanks.
Very interesting. Thanks for the information.
thanks for the info
From what I have seen… the default wordpress ping’s google really good, and new posts that I make are pretty much automaticaly picked up. However… it doesn’t seem to have the same effect on yahoo. Any suggestions?
I am one of those who was building a list of sites to ping on my blog. For the most part this seemed to be going well for me. Though I do not change posts to often. I average 5 posts a week and once they are up they are there to stay.
what about blogger blogs do you have a tool too? am not wordpress and using blogger.com
Hi Lilian,
There’s no much work if you’re using Blogger.com or Wordpress.com as both are hosted on their server and not yours. So, just make some changes on the dashboard will do. Moreover, Google owns Blogger.
Go to the dashboard, under the “Basic” tab, choose “Yes” for below two:
Add your blog to our listings?
Let search engines find your blog?
That’s it! Done. You can spice it up with some web 2.0 methods too if you like for more outstanding results.
Cheers!

thank you for the information , i doesnt know it.
so its interesting.
i use pinging services but very rarely. I’ve heard about getting banned if you overdo it. So i’m very careful.. we should be or else pinging will turn to our disadvantage.
Very Informative post! I got some great tips. Thanks for sharing this information. I have installed MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer, after reading your post. Good luck.
You better start pinging now to reap better results. Do it together with social bookmarking and you’ll see the page you have chosen performs wonders.

wow great information i never knew that much about pinging before i sure learned a lot from this particular post
I have been using Smart Update Pinger for years (at least a couple I think) and it has been a godsend. Definitely makes sure you don’t get yourself banned as well as it is essential when you use desktop blogging software (such as Windows Live Writer) which has pinging built in too.
I must admit that I didn’t know about this pinging thing until now. Of course, I know when you want to check are you pinging correct on site address but I didn’t know that it could be watched. Thanks.
nice post, i had no idea that you could be penalized for pinging too much. thanks for the advice, does this also apply when you’re pinging yourself within your blog?
wow great, thanks for telling us this , i didnt know it and looks like it ll help.
thanks for the useful post, i doesnt knwo it so it helped me to ping the right way.
thanks for the post, with ur help i connect now the right way.
There are so many things to learn when doing a blog! I did not know about this plug-in nor the damage that one can do when using the default settings on Wordpress.
I used pinger and it did a good job, but I agree don’t over use these services. Nobody wants to get blacklisted.
I like to look at list of sites in ping list and add to it. I make sure i am not pinging same site mutiple times.
Nice post, I always make a point of checking your blog, keep up the good work. Barbabra
This has been handy on two of my sites. I had absolutely massive ping lists on them and it slowed down each of my posts. They’ve been thoroughly trimmed and I’ve had no negative impact on them.
Ah, I’m glad you posted this. I planned to post something similar but now I don’t think I’ll need to. Would you mind if I link to it from my livejournal? My visitors might like to read this post too. Regards, Victoria
No problem Victoria. Go ahead. Thanks.
